Madison, known in the art world as Phoenix, has been passionate about painting since childhood. Born and raised in Antigo, Wisconsin, she actively participated in community clubs such as 4-H, FFA, and the Art Club. These early engagements nurtured her love for art and community involvement, laying the groundwork for her artistic journey.
Her path has been marked by challenges, including living with bipolar disorder, which has sometimes led to impulsive decisions. Yet, these decisions have often opened new opportunities, such as her move to Denver, Colorado. There, she was exposed to a diverse range of cultures that enriched her artistic perspective and introduced her to a broader art world. It was also in Denver that she met the father of her children, which brought a new chapter to her life.
Following her marriage, Madison relocated to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where she worked as a nanny. This role broadened her worldview and provided her with valuable life experiences. After her divorce, she returned to Wisconsin and became the general manager of a hotel, marina, bar, and bistro in Door County. This role sharpened her management skills and deepened her understanding of the tourism industry and the significant role art plays in enhancing cultural experiences.
Despite facing homelessness in Green Bay, Madison’s commitment to art remained steadfast. During this difficult period, she found solace and inspiration in her creative work. Her resilience led her to engage with the local art scene, including joining the Green Bay artists’ group, SAGE. This involvement introduced her to mural planning and painting, further expanding her artistic skills.
In the summer of 2019, Madison launched a cookie dough business at the local farmers’ market. This venture unexpectedly became a turning point, boosting her confidence and leading her to showcase and sell her paintings. By summer’s end, her art sales had surpassed her cookie dough earnings, prompting her to pursue art full-time. It was during this time that she adopted the name “Phoenix,” symbolizing rebirth and transformation, marking a decisive shift in her focus to art.
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic allowed Madison to spend valuable time with her children and grandmother in Antigo. After her grandmother’s passing, she inherited the family home and made Antigo her permanent base.
In February 2023, Madison opened her studio and joined the Antigo Visual Arts (AVA) community, dedicated to expanding art tourism and community engagement in her hometown.
Madison’s artistic journey, marked by resilience and growth, reflects the spirit of the Phoenix—rising from challenges and embracing new beginnings. With a unique perspective shaped by diverse experiences, she continues to enrich the artistic landscape of Antigo and beyond, inspiring others with her passion and dedication to the arts.
We are thrilled to have Madison as a part of the AVA community. Her extensive knowledge in public art and experience in mural painting and planning significantly enrich our organization. Her Paint ‘n’ Pour events in downtown Antigo have provided a fantastic outlet for our artists. We have proudly sponsored these events and look forward to continuing them as a valuable member perk.
